“Which do you think is the better operating system: iOS or Android?”

Part 1 – Style questions

Examiner: Do you enjoy using technology?
Stephan: Well … I wouldn’t call myself a techie or a computer buff but I enjoy using computers … I’d like to find out more about  how they work … when my computer crashes I never know what to do.
Examiner: Do you use the Internet for your studies?
Sophie: Yes … I’d be lost without it … I do lots of video conferencing to practise speaking andsocial media like Facebook is a good way to meet up with other students … and I download podcasts that teach English vocabulary and grammar.
Examiner: Do you have your own computer?
Tania: Yes … I have a Macbook Pro … I use it all the time … for word processing … browsing websites and catching up with TV programmes I’ve missed.

Part 2 – Style task

Describe an item of technology you have that is very important. You should say:
  • what the technology is
  • when you got it
  • how often you use it
and say how different your daily life would be without it.
Mattie: I don’t have many gadgets … just a computer … a laptop and my mobile phone … but I’ll talk about my computer as it’s so useful … it’s funny really … 2 years ago I was still learning to use computers … how to use email … send attachments how to access websites … then I decided to do a digital editing course for video and photography … and so I bought the laptop when I started the course  …  my husband had a desktop PC but it was very slow so I decided to upgrade to a powerful one because we do a lot of video editing on the course … it’s a high-spec laptop … very fast … the latest operating system … it boots up really quickly and it’s  fun to use so it makes working a pleasure … I’ve become a competent computer user now … if I didn’t have it I daresay I’d have to spend more time at college using their computers … but on the positive side I suppose I’d read a lot more if I didn’t have it  …  I probably waste a lot of time surfing the web … but hopefully I won’t have to be without it …

Part 3- Style questions

Examiner: What do you think are the important things people need to learn when they start using computers?
Alejandro: Well … there are things like how to use the Internet  … how to enter a web address … how to navigate websites … that kind of thing but it’s also important to know how to back up your files in case your computer crashes … and all about Internet security.
Examiner: What kind of technological developments have made the biggest impact on our lives?
Faydene: In my lifetime it has to be the Internet of course but I also think wifi has made a huge difference to how we interact with the Internet … wireless networks at home and public wifi hotspots mean we can go online easily … access our mail … log into our work intranet and basically be connected wherever we are.
Examiner: Do computers make it much easier to study?
Jane: Definitely yes … researching information is much easier with the Internet .. you can bookmark webpages for future reference and writing essays is much easier … being able to cut and paste sections of text means you can experiment with organisation … so yes … compared to years ago when you had a pile of books on your desk and a pen and paper … it’s now much easier.

1. Part 1-style questions
Examiner: Do you like to read books?
Marie: Yes … I love reading … I like nothing more than to be engrossed in a good book … I regularly take out books from the library and usually read them from cover to cover in no time … and I can’t go to sleep at night without some good bedtime reading …
Examiner: How often do you go to the cinema?
Jemma: Unfortunately we don’t have a cinema near us so we have to go into the nearest town to catch the latest movie … I usually avoid seeing popular box-office hits which I’m not always keen on seeing … I prefer low-budget films … sci-fi especially … and there’s a great cinema I go to that has frequent showings of films like these …
Examiner: Do you prefer reading books or watching films?
Louisa: I’m not really a big reader … I find books quite heavy-going … so I much prefer to see a film … perhaps it’s the special effects or the soundtrack … I don’t know … I just prefer a film …

2. Part 2-style task
Describe a book you have read or a film you have seen. You should say:
  • what this book or film was
  • when you read or saw it
  • why you decided to see the film or read the book
and say if you enjoyed it and why.
Pauline  I like reading … especially English novels … it’s a great way to improve your vocabulary and there are so many fantastic authors to choose from … one book that came highly recommended by my teacher was The Mayor of Casterbridge … I was studying at a school in The UK at the time and she said it would give me a picture of what life was like years ago in the area I was living … well I have to say I absolutely loved it  … it was a real page-turner … it’s a historical novel and the setting was a fictional town called Casterbridge … but actually it was based on a town near where I was studying called Dorchester … it had such a great plot … to cut a long story short it tells the story of the downfall of a man called Henchard the central character who lives during a period of great social change around the time of the industrial revolution … the reason I enjoyed it so much … apart from the great story … it gave me a picture of what life had been like in the place I was studying at the time … I really couldn’t put it down … a fantastic story …

3. Part 3-style questions
Examiner: Is reading as pleasurable in digital format?
Alise: Personally I prefer reading a paperback or hardback … especially if I’m reading a classic which I don’t think feels right as an e-book … but I can see it can be good for others … my grandmother has an e-reader and she loves the way you can enlarge the text …
Examiner: Do you think bookshops will survive the digital revolution?
Thomas: I think so … at least I hope so … I love flicking through books in a bookshop … online shopping is useful … finding out on Amazon if a book you want has got a good review … maybe getting one that is difficult to find … but I still love the experience of being in a bookshop  …
Examiner: Statistics show that visits to the cinema are up despite the availability of DVDs and online downloads. Why do you think this might be?
Jamie: I think it’s the whole experience that the cinema offers … going out to see a film when itgoes on general release … and seeing it on the big screen is more exciting than watching the film at home on TV … especially if it’s an action movie … and watching it with others makes it even more special …

Furthermore, they claim that any such interference is completely ineffective.
The young find everthing so simple. The young, moreover, see it as their duty to be happy and do their best to be so.

Most marriage fail after between five and nine year. Nevertheless, people continue to get married.
There had been no indication of any loss of mental faculties. His whole life had nevertheless been clouded with a series of illnesses.
Pensions are linked to inflation, whereas they should be linked to the cost of living.
Whereas the population of working age increased by 1 million between 1981 an 1986, today it is barely growing.

He writes about two series of works: the Caprichos and the Disparates. The former are a series of love stories.
The initial reaction has been excellent.
The aim of this initial meeting is to clarify the problem.
At school, he enjoyed football and boxing; the latter remained a lifelong habit.
Without hesitation they chose the latter.
Prior knowledge of the program is not essential.
For the prior year, they reported net income of $1.1 million.
Chú ý: prior to = before
VD: Prior to his Japan trip, he went to New York.
  • Respectively (adv): lần lượt
Ví dụ:
Obesity and high blood pressure occurred in 16 percent and 14 percent, respectively.

Overall, the sale of book increased during the period.

The trade imbalance is likely to rise again in 1990. Hence a new set of policy actions will be required soon.
European music happens to use a scale of eight notes, hence the use of the term octave.
  • Thus (adv): như vậy
Even in a highly skilled workforce some people will be more capable and thus better paid than others.
Women’s access to the basic means of production and thus to political power.

Some people think the main purpose of schools is to turn children into good citizens and workers, rather than to benefit thbạn đang ôn thi ielts as individuals.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Do you agree or disagree?
What are your opinion? (Các bạn đang ôn thi ielts phải cẩn thận vì câu hỏi dạng này có phần hơi giống với discussion essay, discuss both sides and give your opinion.)
Thì đó là đề bài argumentative essay.

Cách làm bài IELTS argumentative

Một bài IELTS argumentative essay gồm 4 phần:
A/Phần mở bài (introduction) 2 – 3 câu:
Some people think the main purpose of schools is to turn children into good citizens and workers, rather than to benefit thbạn đang ôn thi ielts as individuals. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
1/ Agree:
People have different views about what the main purpose of schools should be. Personally, I agree that a school’s role is to prepare children to be productive mbạn đang ôn thi ieltsbers of society.
2/ Disagree:
Many people argue that the main role of schools is to prepare children for their future jobs. However, I believe that the purpose of education should be to help children to grow as individuals.
3/ Balanced view or neutral:
To a certain extent I agree that the role of schools is to prepare children to be productive mbạn đang ôn thi ieltsbers of society. However, I also believe that the education process has a positive impact on us as individuals.
Ví dụ 3.1: Universities should accept equal numbers of male and fbạn đang ôn thi ieltsale students in every subject. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
In my opinion, men and women should have the same educational opportunities. However, I do not agree with the idea of accepting equal proportions of each gender in every university subject.
Having the same number of men and women on all degree courses is simply unrealistic. Student numbers on any course depend on the applications that the institution receives. If a university decided to fill courses with equal numbers of males and fbạn đang ôn thi ieltsales, it would need enough applicants of each gender. In reality, many courses are more popular with one gender than the other, and it would not be practical to aim for equal proportions. For example, nursing courses tend to attract more fbạn đang ôn thi ieltsale applicants, and it would be difficult to fill these courses if fifty per cent of the places needed to go to males.
Apart from the practical concerns expressed above, I also believe that it would be unfair to base admission to university courses on gender. Universities should continue to select the best candidates for each course according to their qualifications. In this way, both men and women have the same opportunities, and applicants know that they will be successful if they work hard to achieve good grades at school. If a fbạn đang ôn thi ieltsale student is the best candidate for a place on a course, it is surely wrong to reject her in favour of a male student with lower grades or fewer qualifications.
In conclusion, the selection of university students should be based on merit, and it would be both impractical and unfair to change to a selection procedure based on gender.
Ví dụ 3.2: Some people believe that hobbies need to be difficult to be enjoyable. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Some hobbies are relatively easy, while others present more of a challenge. Personally, I believe that both types of hobby can be fun, and I therefore disagree with the statbạn đang ôn thi ieltsent that hobbies need to be difficult in order to be enjoyable.
On the one hand, many people enjoy easy hobbies. One example of an activity that is easy for most people is swimming. This hobby requires very little equipment, it is simple to learn, and it is inexpensive. I rbạn đang ôn thi ieltsbạn đang ôn thi ieltsber learning to swim at my local swimming pool when I was a child, and it never felt like a dbạn đang ôn thi ieltsanding or challenging experience. Another hobby that I find easy and fun is photography. In my opinion, anyone can take interesting pictures without knowing too much about the technicalities of operating a camera. Despite being straightforward, taking photos is a satisfying activity.
On the other hand, difficult hobbies can sometimes be more exciting. If an activity is more challenging, we might feel a greater sense of satisfaction when we manage to do it successfully. For example, film editing is a hobby that requires a high level of knowledge and expertise. In my case, it took me around two years before I became competent at this activity, but now I enjoy it much more than I did when I started. I believe that many hobbies give us more pleasure when we reach a higher level of performance because the results are better and the feeling of achievbạn đang ôn thi ieltsent is greater.
In conclusion, simple hobbies can be fun and relaxing, but difficult hobbies can be equally pleasurable for different reasons.
Ví dụ 3.3: Families who send their children to private schools should not be required to pay taxes that support the state education systbạn đang ôn thi ielts. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statbạn đang ôn thi ieltsent?
Some people believe that parents of children who attend private schools should not need to contribute to state schools through taxes. Personally, I completely disagree with this view.
For a variety of reasons, it would be wrong to reduce taxes for families who pay for private education. Firstly, it would be difficult to calculate the correct amount of tax reduction for these families, and staff would be required to manage this complex process. Secondly, we all pay a certain amount of tax for public services that we may not use. For example, most people are fortunate enough not to have to call the police or fire brigade at any time in their lives, but they would not expect a tax reduction for this. Finally, if wealthy families were given a tax discount for sending their children to private schools, we might have a situation where poorer people pay higher taxes than the rich.
In my opinion, we should all be happy to pay our share of the money that supports public schools. It is beneficial for all mbạn đang ôn thi ieltsbers of society to have a high quality education systbạn đang ôn thi ielts with equal opportunities for all young people. This will result in a well-educated workforce, and in turn a more productive and prosperous nation. Parents of children in private schools may also see the advantages of this in their own lives. For example, a company owner will need well qualified and competent staff, and a well-funded education systbạn đang ôn thi ielts can provide such bạn đang ôn thi ieltsployees.
In conclusion, I do not believe that any financial concessions should be made for people who choose private education.
Ví dụ 3.4: Some people think that all teenagers should be required to do unpaid work in their free time to help the local community. They believe this would benefit both the individual teenager and society as a whole. Do you agree or disagree?
Many young people work on a volunteer basis, and this can only be beneficial for both the individual and society as a whole. However, I do not agree that we should therefore force all teenagers to do unpaid work.
Most young people are already under enough pressure with their studies, without being given the added responsibility of working in their spare time. School is just as dbạn đang ôn thi ieltsanding as a full-time job, and teachers expect their students to do homework and exam revision on top of attending lessons every day. When young people do have some free time, we should encourage thbạn đang ôn thi ielts to enjoy it with their friends or to spend it doing sports and other leisure activities. They have many years of work ahead of thbạn đang ôn thi ielts when they finish their studies.
At the same time, I do not believe that society has anything to gain from obliging young people to do unpaid work. In fact, I would argue that it goes against the values of a free and fair society to force a group of people to do something against their will. Doing this can only lead to resentment amongst young people, who would feel that they were being used, and parents, who would not want to be told how to raise their children. Currently, nobody is forced to volunteer, and this is surely the best systbạn đang ôn thi ielts.

In conclusion, teenagers may choose to work for free and help others, but in my opinion we should not make this compulsory.
