Task 2 trong bài thi IELTS Writing hỏi về một chủ đề xã hội, chẳng hạn như the environment, education hoặc the media. Có thể nêu ra 4 dạng chính của bài thi IELTS Writing Task 2 như sau:
Dạng 1: Argument
Ở dạng đề này, đề bài sẽ đưa ra một quan điểm và đòi hỏi bạn đưa ra ý kiến của mình về quan điểm đó. Các câu hỏi thường xuất hiện như: “How far do you agree with this statement?” hoặc “To what extent do you agree with this statement?”
Ví dụ:
- Children watch too much TV nowadays and this is bad for their education and development. How far do you agree with this statement?
- In many countries today, the eating habits and lifestyles of children are different from those of previous generations. Some people say this has had a negative effect on their health. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this agreement?
Bạn có thể tùy chọn lập trường của mình, miễn là có đủ lí lẽ, dẫn chứng để thuyết phục người chấm.Bạn có thể “agree”, “disagree” hoặc “partly agree”. Tuy nhiên, theo ý kiến của mình, bạn nên chọn lập trường nào bạn có thể bảo vệ tốt hơn (dù bạn thích nó hay không), chứ không dựa vào sở thích của bản thân. Điều này đảm bảo bạn có thể viết đủ dài và đủ sâu. 
Dạng 2: Discussion
Đề bài sẽ đưa ra hai quan điểm trái chiều nhau và đòi hỏi bạn bàn luận về cả hai vấn đề và đưa ra quan điểm của bản thân. Câu hỏi thường xuất hiện như: “Discuss both these views and give your opinion.”
Ví dụ:
- Some people think that sense of competition should be encouraged in children. However, others consider cooperation more important to make them good adults.Discuss both these views and give your opinion.
- Some people prefer to spend their lives doing the same things and avoiding change. Others, however, think that change is always a good thing. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Bạn phải thảo luận về từng quan điểm một, mỗi đoạn thân bài dành cho một quan điểm. Bạn không nêu ra lập trường của mình cho đến đoạn kết bài.
Dạng 3: Advantages và Disadvantages
Dạng đề này rất dễ nhận dạng và chia bố cục, một đoạn thân bài cho Advantages và đoạn thân bài còn lại cho disadvantages. Câu hỏi thường được đưa ra rất rõ ràng: “What are the advantages and disadvantages of…”
Ví dụ:
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of children using mobile phones?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of social networking in the workplace?
Dạng 4: Causes and Effects/Causes and Solutions/Problems and Solutions
Dạng này yêu cầu người viết về nguyên nhân và tác động/nguyên nhân và hướng giải quyết/vấn đề và hướng giải quyết. Theo đề bài thì bố cục đã rất rõ ràng, mỗi đoạn cho một ý lớn. Tuy nhiên cũng có thể tách causes/problems ra làm hai đoạn, effects/solutions chỉ nên viết trong một đoạn.
Ví dụ:
- Crime rate in teenagers has increased dramatically in many countries in recent years. Give some possible reasons for this increase and suggest solutions to overcome youth crimes.
- Many cities suffer from traffic-related problems. What problems does traffic cause in cities and what are the possible solutions?
